Nymphomaniac (2013)

Nymhpomaniac (2013) written and directed by Lars Von Trier film features the participation of several actors already recognized in previous films by the Danish director like Charlotte Gainsbourg and William Defoe.

The latest Von Trier film is about Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) found in a dark and dirty alley by Selligman (Stellan Skarsgård). Selligan takes Joe to his little home where he decides to take care of Joe while recovering. Joe Selligman argues that she did not deserve that kind treatment ought to the low life that she has chosen to live. Selligman asks Joe why such a poor vision of her own life. And so this is how Joe decides to tell the story of his life based on sexual pleasures. The story takes place from the loss of her virginity and her lovers. Step by Step taking us to the alley where the story begins. Which turns out to be a good method to keep us in the edge of the seat.

Is it really so depraved or is it publicity?

It really has high sexual content scenes, showing penises and vaginas from all over the place. However, these scenes are still very stylized. For people who is used to French cinema with sexual content will seem a regular movie for them. Also, nowadays on the internet you can watch for worst stuff. In Captain Funk's opinion the right answer is both.

The full story about Joe and the sex lenghts around six hours. That's why they decided to divide the theaters version into two volumes or at least is what they said. This volumes division can be seen also as a publicity strategy. Volume 1, it's about the relationships of Joe with lovers and friends; it doesn't have very high tone scenes but high content of crucial elements of the story when we meet the personality of every character. When we reach Vol. 2, which is designed only for people who liked the first deliver. In this volume, it is darker; it has more sexually violent scenes, less fillings with conversations it goes straight to the point to drive us to the sad and dark finale.

Which is the message?

It is a story about love in which sex is not important, only cares about feelings. It is a movie which tries to show the sex as something philosophical and relegious relating it with flora and fauna. Displaying that love comes from the soul and the heart.

Is it good?

Yes, it is good. If we compare this movie with the other works by Von Trier, this movie is better than Melancholia but it can engage a debate with Antichrist.

Yes, in occasions Nymphomaniac can be pretentious but this happens because of the strange sense of humor that has Von Trier.

The Captain Funk says, this movie exceeds in its long duration but this is a constant problem that we can see in all of Von Trier works.

The cast and their acting shines flawlessly as an established dream team by the writer and director. With Nymphomaniac, Lars Von Trier proves that he is an excelent person doing his work which is directing the people, fundamental esscence on every film.
